About Us
Design Essence, Inc. was founded in 1977 by professional interior designer Jan Blonder, to address the need for
attainable, quality interior design. Jan graduated from the University of Connecticut with a major in interior
design, and is an Allied member of A.S.I.D.
Jan worked for a small, upscale retail home furnishings store prior
to forming Design Essence Inc., but found the retail format alone too limiting for both artistic expression and
client needs. Establishing the new company, at first with an office and warehouse presence, allowed virtually unlimited
access for the company and its clients, whether it be through more exclusive manufacturers, designer showrooms, or custom
fabricators. Initially, private clients exclusively were served through this new, expanded format.
Gaining momentum and feeling the need to expand, in 1996, Jan opened a 3,000 square foot
shop in the picturesque seaside town of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, presenting the unique array of furnishings and
accessories representative of Design Essence Inc., to an even wider audience.
Jan and team have completed projects throughout New England, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Florida, and
have participated in designer show houses. Jan has had work published, taught interior design, and lectured to various civic groups.
